An AI-powered research and note-taking assistant grounded in your own documents.
Gemini Notebook is Google's source-grounded AI research tool, renamed from NotebookLM on July 16, 2026. It is the same product; existing notebooks, shared links, and saved sources carried over automatically with no migration required. It first launched at Google I/O 2023 under the codename "Project Tailwind" before becoming NotebookLM.
The tool now has over 30 million users and 600,000+ organizations, according to Google. You upload documents, links, or transcripts, and it answers questions, generates summaries, and produces "Audio Overviews," a podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts discussing your material, strictly grounded in what you fed it, not general web knowledge.
The most common use case is dumping a pile of documents, research papers, or a meeting transcript into a notebook and asking questions directly against that material, instead of reading everything manually or risking a general chatbot making things up.
A solo consultant uploads a client's entire onboarding packet and asks Gemini Notebook to draft a summary of open questions before a kickoff call. A course creator uploads their own lecture notes and generates an Audio Overview, a two-host podcast-style discussion of the material, as a study aid or a repurposed content asset.
Deep Research, added in late 2025, lets the tool build its own cited source list from the open web automatically, rather than requiring you to upload everything yourself first, useful for a founder starting research on an unfamiliar topic from scratch.
Every response is restricted to the documents, links, or files you've uploaded, not general web knowledge, which meaningfully reduces the risk of a confidently wrong answer on your own material.
Generates a podcast-style, two-host discussion of your sources, plus short-form vertical and Cinematic (Veo 3, Ultra only) video versions. The format itself is fixed: no script editing, no choosing your own hosts, on any tier.
Builds its own cited source list from the open web automatically, removing the "blank notebook" problem of having to gather sources yourself before starting.
Every notebook now includes a secure cloud environment that can write and run code against your uploaded data, added in the same update as the rename. Currently live for Ultra, rolling out to Pro over time.
Every plan, free through Ultra, allows the same maximum file size per source: 500,000 words or 200MB. Upgrading raises how many sources and notebooks you can have, never how large a single source can be.
Solo founders and consultants who need to process long documents, transcripts, or research quickly, especially anyone doing client discovery, competitive research, or turning existing content into new formats like an Audio Overview.
Course creators and educators using flashcards, quizzes, and mind maps generated directly from their own teaching material.
Source-grounded chat, Deep Research (automatic web sourcing), document summaries, citation tracking back to source material
Audio Overviews (multilingual), Video Overviews (standard and short-form vertical), Cinematic Video Overviews (Ultra only, Veo 3), slide decks, infographics, flashcards, quizzes, exportable data tables, mind maps
Code execution inside notebooks, agentic source discovery, Gemini 3 model access (Pro and up)
Shared team notebooks with usage analytics, response style and length customization
5x or more notebook capacity, VPC Service Controls, IAM controls, regionalization, enterprise-grade data protection, higher daily caps across every generation type
Free Plan (Standard): 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chat queries per day, 3 Audio Overviews and 3 Video Overviews per day, 10 reports, flashcards, or quizzes per day, 10 Deep Research sessions per month. Every core feature is included at this tier, including Audio Overviews, Deep Research, and Slide Decks. No credit card, no trial window, no expiry.
Plus: roughly $4.99 to $7.99/month (bundled into Google AI Plus): Roughly doubles free-tier limits: 200 notebooks, 100 sources per notebook, higher daily chat and Audio Overview caps, plus shared team notebooks and response style controls.
Pro: $19.99/month (bundled into Google AI Pro): 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook, 500 chats per day, Gemini 3 model access, more Deep Research runs, code execution (rolling out).
Ultra: from $99.99/month, up to $199.99/month (bundled into Google AI Ultra, 20TB and 30TB storage tiers): Up to 600 sources per notebook, up to 2,500 to 5,000 chats per day, up to 100 Audio Overviews per day, Cinematic Video Overviews (Veo 3), highest Deep Research caps.
Workspace / Enterprise: Available through Google Workspace business plans, with higher notebook capacity and enterprise-grade data controls. Exact per-seat pricing varies by Workspace plan; confirm with a Google Workspace admin.
There Is No Standalone Subscription: Every paid tier is bundled into a broader Google AI plan, billed through your Google account, not purchased separately from Gemini Notebook itself.
If You Cancel: Notebooks and sources remain accessible on the Free tier if you downgrade from a paid Google AI plan, though daily volume limits drop back to the free caps immediately.
⚠️ Worth knowing: every tier runs on the exact same underlying model. Upgrading from Free to Ultra doesn't produce smarter summaries or better Audio Overviews, it produces more of them per day. If your actual complaint is answer quality rather than hitting a daily cap, paying more won't fix it.
Prices last verified August 2026. Google AI plan pricing and Gemini Notebook's bundled limits change periodically; confirm current figures directly on Google's pricing page.
Manually reading and summarizing long PDFs or reports, since the tool answers questions and generates summaries directly from what you upload.
Pasting long documents into a general chatbot and hoping it stays grounded in your material, since every answer here is restricted to your uploaded sources.
A basic study guide or flashcard creation process, since quizzes, flashcards, and mind maps generate automatically from your sources.
A dedicated note-taking or web-capture tool. There's no way to save material directly as you browse, so it works best paired with something like a browser highlighter that feeds sources in.
Your own writing or editing tool for anything client-facing. Gemini Notebook synthesizes and organizes, but the output still needs a human pass before it goes out under your name.
