High-performance, open-weight LLMs optimized for enterprise sovereign control.
Mistral AI lets you write, research, and code with frontier-grade models without paying frontier-grade prices or routing your work through a US-only data policy.
Mistral AI is a French AI company that builds large language models and the products around them, including a conversational assistant you can use directly in a browser or app. It was founded in April 2023 in Paris by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, three researchers who previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta.
The company was built on a specific bet: release strong models with open weights wherever possible, host everything in Europe, and let developers self-host if they need to. That combination, openness plus European data control, is what separates Mistral from most of its US-based competitors. The assistant app, first launched as Le Chat and now being rebranded as Vibe, is the entry point most people actually use.
The most common use is exactly what you'd expect from any AI chat assistant: drafting emails and proposals, summarizing long documents, and getting quick, sourced answers to research questions without opening ten browser tabs. Because the underlying models handle French and other European languages unusually well, it's also become a go-to for translation and localization work between English and French, German, or Spanish.
Beyond chat, three other tasks come up often. Document analysis through Mistral's OCR model turns scanned contracts, invoices, and reports into searchable, structured text. Coding help runs through Vibe's coding agent, which can work inside a terminal, an IDE, or a browser tab to write and debug code, not just explain it. And quick automation, through more than 100 connectors to tools like Notion, Slack, and Google Drive, lets you pull information from your existing stack into a chat instead of switching tabs to look it up.
The main assistant interface for chat, web search, document upload, and image generation. It runs on web, mobile, and desktop, and it's the product most people mean when they say "Mistral."
A coding agent that works in the command line, inside VS Code or JetBrains, or remotely in an isolated sandbox. It's built to handle longer coding tasks on its own, not just answer one-off questions.
Document extraction built specifically for messy, real-world files: scanned PDFs, mixed-format contracts, tables buried inside reports. It's one of the more accurate OCR models available through a general assistant.
Several Mistral models, including Mistral 7B, are released under an Apache 2.0 license for research and individual use. If you or a developer you work with ever needs to self-host for cost or compliance reasons, that option exists here in a way it doesn't with most closed competitors. Commercial deployment of these models requires a separate license.
Over 100 connectors let the assistant search, summarize, and act across tools you already use, and scheduled tasks can run prompts or workflows automatically without you starting the chat each time.
People running their own client work who need a daily writing and research assistant without a large monthly bill. Teams that need European data residency for compliance reasons. Developers who want a coding agent plus the option to self-host models later if their needs or budget change.
Students, who get Pro at $5.99/month with verification, and larger organizations that need custom deployments, audit logs, and single sign-on through the Enterprise plan.
Anyone whose main need is highly polished, nuanced long-form English business writing. Independent testing in 2026 still puts Claude and ChatGPT slightly ahead on that specific task, even though Mistral has closed much of the gap on reasoning and coding benchmarks.
Chat with current models, voice mode for transcription and summaries, Skills for saved instructions and repeatable tasks, web search, verified news, document and file upload (PDF, images, CSV, Office files), image generation, code interpreter, canvas for documents and mockups, project folders, task scheduling.
Vibe CLI, Vibe for IDE (VS Code and JetBrains), remote coding agents, session handoff between local and remote, run history and audit trails for coding sessions, coding-specific connectors, custom shell hooks.
Connectors (beta), custom MCP server connections (beta), domain name verification, knowledge connectors for real-time external data.
Custom self-hosted or private-cloud deployments, admin API, data export, audit logs, SAML SSO, white-label branding.
Free: Access to Mistral's current models, image generation, a code interpreter, and the connector directory. Messages, web searches, and coding sessions are capped daily. Prompts and outputs may be used to improve the models, since the training opt-out isn't available on this tier.
Pro, $14.99/month: Higher message and web search limits, more image generations, all-day coding access, and chat and email support. This tier also unlocks the option to opt your data out of model training.
Team, $24.99/user/month: Everything in Pro, plus up to 30GB of storage per user, domain name verification, and data export, which is not available on Free or Pro.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for private or self-hosted deployments, custom models, audit logs, SAML SSO, and white-label branding. Requires contacting sales directly.
Education: $5.99/month for verified students at accredited institutions, valid for up to 12 months and only for new users who haven't used the assistant before.
Annual billing: As of this writing, Mistral's pricing page doesn't advertise an annual discount the way some competitors do. Billing appears to be monthly across all consumer tiers.
If you cancel: Only Team and Enterprise plans include a documented data export option. If you're on Free or Pro and building anything you'd want to keep, such as saved chat history, project folders, or custom Skills, copy it out manually before downgrading or canceling, since there's no confirmed self-serve export at that level.
Prices last verified July 2026. Check mistral.ai/pricing for current rates before subscribing, since the product is mid-rebrand from Le Chat to Vibe and terms may shift.
If you're already paying for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro purely to chat, research, and draft, Mistral's Pro plan at $14.99/month covers similar ground for about a third less. Since image generation and a code interpreter now ship inside the free and paid plans, you can likely drop a separate image tool you were using just for quick visuals.
It doesn't replace a dedicated project management or CRM system, and the connector directory pulls context from those tools rather than standing in for them.
If your main need is polished, nuanced long-form English writing at a professional level, this adds a cheaper option to your stack rather than a clean substitute for what you're using now.
